Lesson 4

You have learned various particles through example sentences in Lesson 2. In this lesson, you will learn four more basic particles that we haven’t covered. Upon completing this lesson, you will have finished the entire Grammar Point 1 in the textbook (pp.41-56).

When to start this lesson

Using the two slides below, listen to the example sentences from Lesson 2 again. You are ready to start this lesson if you can translate most of the sentences without looking at the English translations.

This slide includes the example sentences from the sections 1. Basic Rules for Forming Japanese Sentences, 2. Functions of Particles, and 3. An Essential Difference Between Japanese and English in GP1-1. Particles and Word Order.

pp.45-49

This slide includes the example sentences in GP1-2. Other Uses of で / に and Other Basic Particles.

  • Learning particles to list two or more nouns (N1 and N2, N1 or N2, etc.)
  • Understanding the functions and usages of the particle の
  • Understanding the difference between これ and この

What you will be able to do

By completing this lesson, you will be able to do the following things:

  • You can correctly use particles that are used between two nouns.
  • You can make noun phrases that a noun modifies the other noun. (my friend, my teacher’s car, a book of Japan’s history, etc.)
  • You can use basic demonstrative pronouns such as “this’ and “that” correctly.

    • What is the major difference between the particles learned in Lesson 2 and the ones introduced in this lesson?
  2. Read “GP1-3. Particles Used Between Two Nouns” in the textbook (pp.51-53 in the main volume) to deepen your understanding. When you read example sentences, check word definitions and pronunciations using the example sentence slides below. This set of slides also contains additional example sentences that are not included in the textbook. Be sure to pay attention to these examples as well.
